Yeah, a screen just isn't the same for reading big blocks of text. Books are more portable and tactile. It just feels like I should have the "thing".
But music is different. Music never really had a tactile component, so I don't miss it when I stop buying the physical media. And unlike DVDs, the stuff you miss out on by not getting the actual retail object (special features and such) was really never much with CDs.
i saw a lot of Kindles in the past few weeks, and i'm tempted - like an IPod it's so neat and tidy.
but...even though i sort of value my music collection above all else, there's nothing like owning a book....particularly a cool old copy, or a new version with a great cover....
however, lately i feel like i've spent way too much on downloads, musically, and i wish i had more hard albums. though where i would put them all i don't know as i buy at least ten albums a month already and am rapidly running out of space.
Mostly the whole CD thing. The new Brand New album came out today. It leaked a month ago and the band announced that they didn't care if people downloaded it, because they're of the whole....fuck money and our record label persuasion.
But my bro is all "I NEED TO HAVE THE ARTWORKS AND LINER NOTES AND BLAHHHH" and I just really don't get it. He doesn't care about 'saving the music industry' or anything. And especially in this instance where the band has said they don't care.
My BROTHER is WEIRD.
And I agree, the book is far greater than the CD/vinyl record/etc.
Books turn words into a material object to possess--you have to look at a book to read a book. Music is something you experience through sound so there's nothing to see, hence I feel far less need to have some physical representation of it.
Books are cool, vinyl is rad, CDs are pretty dumb. Also, if your brother downloads from the right site, don't the CD art and liner notes come with the .flacs/mp3s/whatevers? I guess that's another one of those book vs ebook things.
I definitely read comics on my computer. Four bucks for the size of comic books these days versus free? Aw yiss.
I used to read comics on my computer (also how I got most of my renders for graphics work), but it got hard to find them week after week, and I found playing video games all day was more entertaining.
@Nick! Not with leaked albums, generally speaking. I guess. I mean I don't really care about that stuff so I'm not sure. But I'm sure he would say even that is not good enough.
I read comics (on the occasions that I actually read comics) on my computer too, but they are, admittedly not exactly the same as a book.
@jailbreak johnny Where you been, boy? It's called Daisy and it's pretty cool. Grungy. And the album art is awesome as in "three wolves howling at the moon" tshirt awesome. Almost.
I get my books from the library, dudes. Though I've bought some lately.
Related, I've also found the idea of buying CDs in their physical form to be pretty stupid by now. Sure, the artwork, but when do I really look at the stuff?
i hate reading books on my computer

book > cd.
CD, I'm proud of you and Imma let you finish but the Book is the best physical media of all time, OF ALL TIME!

(Sorry.)
My brother and I have been arguing about this.

I heart your brosky.
Also, new Brand New? I know what I'm doing when I get home.

both become so much clutter after a while
but you pretty much need the book to read it the first time
Books need to be books and now anything digital, you can't upgrade a book, a book is great at being what it is.
Music is good to buy in bulk digital but for albums I love I need them on vinyl, so like, i posses them and can not loose them to a shitty harddrive.
@Lis - I've been around, girl.
