You look really nice.
Once upon a time, I went on a date that fizzled. I tried a few different types of questions. No sparks. Then last week I saw a play about an awkward teenager and the local girl who falls in love with him. They arrange a first date, and when he sees her that night he says: "You look really nice." It never occurred to me to compliment the woman I dated.

Don't worry, it gets worse.
After thinking, "Oh, I should have told her she looked really nice," I had a second thought.
"Wait, she didn't look that nice."
She was not at all ugly, but she dressed down on purpose and presented herself in a nondescript way.
And I really do find it impossible to lie. I can't say she looks nice if I'm saying it as an empty gesture.
Yeah 10 times out of 10 compliments please the ladies. Unless it's a cheesy pick up line, but then that's not really a compliment.
