i was totally obsessed with like big booty bitches music until like end of 7th grade, when I randomly was scanning through radio stations and heard some amazing song by some band. and then i listened to the rock station all weekend so i could find out the name, and I was like, hey, this shit isn't so bad.
Best friends, Boys I liked, extracurriculars (choir, dance, theater), older cousins setting the tone for what was cool, my own curiosity, Boys I dated introducing new stuff, my weird uncle, my parents, and my younger brother as of about 5 years ago.
OH I forgot one of the most important influences of all... working at my college radio station. We had a huge library of music, some new and some old. Each week we were supposed to take home at least 5 CDS/records and write little reviews. I always took home at least 10. I started downloading stuff I liked and eventually incorporated it into my shows.
A guy I rode the bus with my junior year of high school got me into hip hop (Beastie Boys - Hello Nasty). My dorm at Miami was the international dorm, so techno was very common place. Nowadays, I listen to the radio, take suggestions from friends, and constantly check Metacritic to see what good albums just came out.
i really don't know, i've always been the one turning my friends onto music and stuff, i never really had anyone show me the way or, like, pass me along a tape of stuff or anything. I guess I just read a lot of music mags and websites?
1. this tall black dude who played bass 2. 3 or 4 college radio DJs. . .3 of them, girls with really cute fucking voices 3. kids who worked in record stores in Philly 4. college best friend 5. random people I collaborated/was in bands with
A new wave chic I was infatuated with got me into punk, post-punk, industrial, and the like. Got into jazz via reading Beat Lit. I got into electronica after hearing a bit of Kraftwerk.
yeah no particular person "showed me the way" in terms of music. after I got into what I'm into, I was the one making mix cd's for EVERYONE to get them to stop listening to shitty miami music.
Lots of different places. I heard some of the stuff my brothers would listen to growing up. I heard rock/metal music when I was in grade school and that followed through into high school. Punk, goth and industrial were influences from my friends in college. My housemates are usually listening to some stuff from the folk rock singer/songwriter variety over the house music server. Other than that it's random stuff I hear on the radio. I got into Soul Coughing because I heard "Screenwriter's Blues" one night driving home from a friend's house.
my best friend. made a mix dvd for me years ago and only recently have i really immersed myself in it

And then it just evolved from there.
I just seem to absorb new musical interests by osmosis.
