dropbox?

Yeah, probably. I think Celisse alluded to this in another thread, but...there's the increasing concern of sites just shutting down. And Google docs new privacy policy. Sigh.

not Mozy, I lost my shit with them.

dropbox are still pretty good. But like everything else, it pays to do your own backups as well.

I agree. Dropbox is likely the best option. I like that you can just drag and drop things to it and they're magically EVERYWHERE. I don't keep that much in it, though.

I don't see a site like Dropbox getting shut down in the foreseeable future. There's precedent for sites hosting copyrighted content being left alone, as long as the site's owners have no knowledge or participation in it. If a site can prove that it's simply storage, with no oversight of what's being stored by individuals, it's good. I'm probably wording that badly, but it's 1:45 AM. Megaupload, on the other hand, was fully aware and encouraging upload of copyrighted junk, which makes it an obvious target.

Yeah. My main qualm is that I want to be able to get to my work files at work and at home and I was just using google docs a lot of the time, but now their privacy policy is all "we can make anything you upload here public!" (if I'm reading that right) and all these privacy issues with student data get in the way and argghh.

The way I read it isn't that they'll just make your shit public. But they will share information about *your* account amongst their different services. So now your gmail will start showing you ads based on what you've watched on youtube, for eg.

"By submitting, sharing, uploading, posting or displaying the Content you give Google a worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, share, upload, post or display on or through the Service for the sole purpose of enabling Google to provide you with the Service in accordance with the Google Docs Privacy Policy."

I mean, I'm not reading this as something that WILL happen, but something that CAN happen, simply by uploading ANYTHING on google docs. Which means it would be really stupid to upload anything personal on there, right?

They key part is the "for the sole purpose of enabling Google to provide you with the Service". They can only publish your shit publicly if they think it will give you a better service.

Yeah, it's a dumb policy, and it almost certainly won't pan out that way. But I'll agree that putting anything really personal up there isn't such a good idea. And I'd never use it for anything commercial at this point.

What should go here?
