Best one-day-in-town walk- Start at the Embarcadero Ferry Building Farmer's Market, grab a blue bottle coffee and a pastry at Frog Hollow. Walk up Kearny or Grant to ooh and ahh over Chinatown. Cross Broadway and woot you're in North Beach. Buy a book at City Lights and a sandwich at Molinari's (or a peep show at the Lusty Lady) and keep walking up Columbus until you're at the Wharf. Peep the sea lions for free, have chowder in a sourdough bowl at Boudin, walk over to Ghiradeli, line up for $5 cable car ride on Hyde Street to get back to Powell and Market. If you're a shopper end the day at Union Square, or get half price tickets to a play that night or just have a pricey drink at the bar on the top of the Marriott with the 3 story windows.
Best "touristy" thing to do: Alcatraz - Takes all afternoon but doesn't suck the way pier 39 does.
Best real-day-in-the-city - Bart to 16th and Mission, walk one block to Valencia. Head south for 8 blocks, alternating bars, vintage shops and taqueries until full or broke. Continue East on 24th st, looking at murals and such. Bonus score- Try to locate (and eat at) the following: Tartine, Bi-Rite Cremery, Mission Pie, Humphrey Slocomb, Dynamo Donuts. Do not explode.
Awesome, thanks! We ended up doing the walk around the mission thing. Got a burrito at Mariachi's and got a velour jacket at Thrift World or whatever it is on Market. Ate at Cha-Ya later on, and now I am up in Fairfax where my pal lives. Just dropped him off at work and will pick him up in 11 hours. Anything worth doing in Fairfax?
okay, thinking . . .
