She covered the smoke-detectors with plastic bags, because she kept burning stuff she was trying to cook. Then she just forgot to take the bags down. The fine is $250. :(
Too late, they left me with the slip and disappeared into the night.
WHY they expected anyone to be awake at almost 5 AM is beyond me. Waking up everyone in the dorm in the middle of the night in order to pass out fine notices seems like the cruelest idea ever.
Delivering it will suck. But I feel worse about having to single her out without really consulting her first, especially since I know she might not have the money to pay it.
Although the chief security guy made some snide little joke about "splitting the bill" when he gave me the slip.
Nobody likes to be the bearer of bad news, much less its implementor.
I do agree that if anyone has to pay, it should be her. I just didn't want to be the one to have to enforce that, since I really like her, and wouldn't have wished a fine on her.
How about this, what if another set of roommates did it, and you know they did it, but they didn't admit to it. Am I correct in assuming that you would get fined if they didn't come forward? Would that be fair?
Yeah I understand. Maybe you can have a donation jar or something. Or maybe a fund raiser room party. Do you have exams coming up soon? How old are you? Can you sell post exam fundraiser shots?
@om nom nom: I have no idea where they are now. Stalking the night elsewhere, ruining more students' evenings no doubt.
@portableteejay: The post-exam fundraiser shots is actually a pretty awesome idea, although I also feel like pre-exam liquid courage might go over just as well, haha.
Isn't there a way to get out of it so they can't fine ANYONE? First let her know what happened. Then go to the office (there has to be an office somewhere,) go to your dorm, say there was some mistake, you guys didn't do it and don't know who did, and will fight it tooth and nail if they put a hold on your accounts/admissions/grades whatever dumb thing they do. Hopefully they will drop the charge because the whole thing sounds ridiculous (even though it was unsafe and she could have burnt the building down.)
I'm sorry, I hate to be a douche and side with The Man, but rules (and fines to enforce them) are kind of necessary when you've got a a building full of 18 year-old who can barely tie their shoes living together. Miss Cheap Shot should in no way be responsible for having to deliver the citation. That's lame, if security can get her full name and address, then they can damn well mail it to her themselves. When I was in college my dorm had very strict rules about no incense, hot plates or halogen lights in the dorms, and we still had some asshole start a fire in a bathroom trashcan on cold winter night at 4:30 in the AM.
i'm sorry, but your friend needs to either learn how to sautée without filling a room full of smoke or at least take her baggies down so the building doesn't burn down the next time someone has a bong-lighting mishap. It sucks that the fine is so big, but i wouldn't feel too bad about giving up her name. It's not like you called into a tip hot line...you just didn't lie/cover-up for her, you're really not under any obligation to lie for anybody if you don't want to. Sucks for your friend, but I really wouldn't lose any sleep over it.
I have approximately three hours until she gets up.
On another note, my internal monologue gets increasingly silly and entertaining the less sleep I get.
what'd she do?
She covered the smoke-detectors with plastic bags, because she kept burning stuff she was trying to cook. Then she just forgot to take the bags down. The fine is $250. :(
well i'd tell the ppl fining her to tell her themselves because it's really not your job.
and you get nothing out of doing their dirty work.
Too late, they left me with the slip and disappeared into the night.

seems like some sort of sadist is in charge of those people.
Sorry you got stuck with the delivery.

Why do you feel like crap? Why should you (or anyone else) have to pay for something wrong she did?

That sounds kind of harsh.. hmm.

Yes, you're correct, and like I said, I do think that she should be the one to pay the fine.
I just wish that it didn't have to come from me (with no warning as well), however indirectly.
eh, id just go back to them and say it's their prob to deliver the news.
@om nom nom: I have no idea where they are now. Stalking the night elsewhere, ruining more students' evenings no doubt.

well if there's a number on the ticket or whatnot i'd call it and say hey wtf don't make me do your job.
Nope, no number... I think I'm stuck with it.
But anyway, thank you guys. I actually do feel a bit better about my decision now. :]
Send it in a Lobstergram!
Tape it to her door, if you really dont feel like doing it face to face.
What happens if she DOESN'T pay the fine?
Maybe you guys should teach her how to cook so she doesn't burn the building down.
...I mean, we've all played The Sims, right?

I'm extremely verbose today. sorry.
