Use the upper right arrow in the tools palette- It should be the one that doesn't have a little plus. Deselect the object, then select a point. Hit shift to hit as many points as you want.

I only have an ancient version of illustrator but I'm assuming they still have the pathfinder options, which I find can save a lot of time and effort rather than fucking around with the pen and direct selection tools.
So, I'm not sure how I did it in the end, but it is done. I can never seem to make the pathfinder tools work for me. Probably just need to spend more time with them.
