To answer the questions, in order: Seems like a good idea. Yes. Yes.

I'm mostly just confused personally because I like the idea of marriage way more than I like the idea of taking someone's name. Also, I'm wondering what kind of crap you'll have to go through to change names without a marriage license.

We're against the idea of having to prove our love with a legal document just because everyone expects us to. We're for showing the world that we don't ever want anyone else, though.

I think in my state there's like a fee to get the papers made up and then you have to get it verified in court.

but what about the discount in insurance rate? wouldn't that make up for the legal fees? For me it was made up in 2 months
