if you're tall, pretty much ALWAYS YES. little short things like me do not benefit from them much, I feel. but having said that I do think there are shapes and styles to suit most (GAH I sound like a boring housewifey magazine journalist) and the rise of the one piece in the past couple of years has led to some really cool ones being produced. so basically YES and especially if you're long-legged!
Oh man, if you're tall, there's a good chance you have a long torso, and then you're entering into some dangerous territory. I've completely given up on halter one-pieces because with my long torso and not small chest, my boobs just wind up falling out ALL THE TIME. Not cool.
But, to answer the question... yes, I think they're cute. As long as you find the right fit.
@kirsty, Well, I'm tall-ish, but basically average (5'7"?) but my legs aren't anything to talk about.
@emily- I have a normal-length torso, but OMG, halter swimsuits NEVER EVER hold in the boobs. I tried one on the other day just to see if they figured out how to make them work yet. It was laughable.
@lauren- When did you get back here? And I actually have looked at that site! I'm worried about their S-M-L sizing, I usually get bathing suits with bra-sizes or at least number sizes, will they support the boobs?
@salomea- I think the one that you say is "matronly"! I think it's unique! The modcloth one is pretty hot though, but I can't afford it. And that polka-dotted one at the bottom is cute and looks like it would actually cover the girls!
@centro- Athletic women generally look awkward in anything that isn't a one-piece. Like an athletic girl in a frilly bikini? It always makes me look twice.
I like one pieces fine, it's just that I wear athletic suits so often that when I actually go swim for fun, I'd rather be less confined. There was one at J. Crew last year that I wanted but they don't have something similar this year...
@erica- I want to a J. Crew outlet about a week ago and was very sad they weren't selling anything bathing suits in the store! I just looked at the website thought and they have some cuuuute bathing suits this year.
I really like this, but of course it's like the most expensive one: http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/swim/patternsandprints/PRDOVR~26674/26674.jsp
'Cause I've pretty much given up on bikinis.
Me too!!
(And yes, one-pieces are very cute. But I suspect you don't actually have anything to worry about either way.)

pretty much never
I like them on athletic women. That may have something to do with being on the swim team for several years.

oh i love them, especially if they are the cute retro ones. have you looked at pinupgirlclothing.com? they have lovely one-pieces :]
Yes! Well, some. I want this one from modcloth so bad:

However, I cannot afford to spend $90 on a swimsuit. But if I did... modcloth has a lot of cute ones.
Meanwhile, I got a navy one with a sweetheart neckline and then a sheer panel to the neck that... well... I wanted to think of it as "retro" but it's basically just matronly.

So.... that's not good. But I believe they can be good!
I mean this:

that me and a friend signed up for it. we should show up in one pieces and start crying if they don't let us in.

I like them. I've had my eye on this for a while: http://www.modcloth.com/store/ModCloth/Womens/Swimwear/Bathing+Beauty+One+Piece+in+Blue+Velvet
This is also cute, affordable, and comes in a range of colors/patterns.

this too, maybe: http://store.delias.com/item.do?itemID=48861&outfitID=1139&color=BLK&categoryID=1505&sizeFilter=&colorFilter=&brandFilter=
I might end up getting that last one, because I can't afford the velvet one.
Ooh! I love that last black one.
