HI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAKELIKEPAPER!!!!!!!!!! I'M SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU!!!!!!!
we've been having and influx of "My Little Pony" visitations, and every time someone would say MLP, I would think, "MLP is NOT My Little Pony, It's MakeLikePaper dammit."
MIAMI HURRICANE TIP: if you can fit some of those gallon water bottles in your freezer, DO IT. If the power goes out, it will help keep your food cold. We always buy enough gallon jugs to keep two or three in the freezer. Then we'll leave one in there when the power goes, and two in the fridge so our food won't spoil. And then we have a few left over for drinking if needed.
celisse: that's a great tip! our fridge has an ice maker so i've made it overflow so we have plenty of ice to keep the freezer cold and make up ice boxes if nec (plus extra for beverages)
also, we're on low-lying land (they've evacuated everywhere around us) so we're also in danger in flooding.
but yes, celisse, you should totally put up a hurricane preparedness list online with all your tips. http://www.freewilliamsburg.com/hurricane-guide-by-a-floridian/ this one was good but it didn't have the gallon freezer tip which means it sucks.
ok, time to go outside and enjoy some pre-hurricane boozin.
Flooding is no bueno. I have been fortunate enough to avoid any flooding through all the hurricanes and storms I've been through. For where I live, the wind is ways the biggest factor. Tornados are scary :(
I love doing the big frozen water jug thing because bags of ice and ice makers and stuff melt eventually and create a huge mess. If the water in the jug melts, it stays in the bottle, obvz, so it's not so bad.
This doesn't apply for NYC really cos not everyone has their own cars, but before we got a generator, we got these electrical outlet things that pull power from your car battery. We were able to charge all our cellphones (which was useless since the at&t towers were down, although Verizon towers were unaffected.) and computers, AND we were able to power one of our ceiling fans for a bit which helped SO MUCH to combat the disgusting heat left behind after Katrina. We eventually just went to a hotel, though.
You have to be careful not to drain your car battery though haha
7) Find a Florida friend that isn’t in the evac zone and get an invite to their hurricane party. We are all having them and will be complaining nonstop that we thought we had moved away from all this nonsense. But we will still be the ones with the best board games and the most beer. And the first ones playing outside when its deemed safe(ish).
BEST TIP EVER, TOVA. too bad I'm not there. I have trivial pursuit FOR DAYS. And the best time to attempt flight is right before the rain really picks up, after the wind starts to get semi scary. Tie the corners of a flat sheet each to your wrists and ankles. Then go outside and catch the wind like a giant flying squirrel. ITS AWESOME.
WAIT WHY ARE YOU PREPPING FOR A HURRICANE WHERE DO YOU LIVE NOW?
ALSO. HI.

One of those hand-crank cell phone chargers might be good to have...if the power goes out the first thing you'll miss is your cell-phone battery.

This makes me glad I live in Idaho, where the only natural disaster is the republican party!
