yeah basic amateurish HTML would be just fine. Though I spose it wouldn't hurt to learn CSS, but that seems like a lot of effort, and frankly I don't want to spend the time it takes to become a good coder.
HTML hasn't changed much (or at all depending on who you talk to), but you'll need at least some working knowledge of CSS to make something that doesn't look like you clicked on the wayback machine.
It's not free, but RapidWeaver is pretty good for basic page/site design.
yeah, you can definitely use iWeb without mobileme... i just need to sell some mobileme (anyone in LA wanna come to the grove for mobileme????).
but yeah, i love iWeb, and i don't use their templates... i design my own off of the blank template. no need to know html and they end up looking really professional. i'm finishing up my site soon, and right now it's just an Under Construction page, but this is my site (done on iWeb): www.thescrabbledeggs.com
I've been a MobileMe (or .Mac) member for nearly 9 years now. The shared iDisk is great because I can access my data from any of my 5 computers, and my 60GB of space allows me to share just about anything with others. And my most sensitive data is backed up offsite. However, I wish Apple would ditch their calendar and address book and just integrate with google cal and contacts.
@scrab Looking at your page, that looks pretty much perfect for what I want to do. Nothing too complicated, just decent looking non-pro stuff. I kind of want a handmade feel, actually, I'd like it to be a little wonky and broken-ish.
I downloaded RapidWeaver, so maybe I'll play around with both and see which suits me best.
get your fonts at dafont.com -- good idea to turn them into images of some sort, so that all web browsers will read them the same.
i need to do more work on my page. i have almost everything together, i've just been really lazy... maybe after a few glasses of wine tonight i'll finish it up.
heh, turning fonts into images is definitely way beyond me at this point. I'm putzing around with RapidWeaver a bit and I'm liking it, still not sure which way I'll go. But I think I need to focus on content for a while anyway, I'm totally putting the cart ahead of the horse.
It's so sad, I used to be the go-to guy for when people needed to know computer stuff. I used to build my own machines from parts. I was online before there was a WWW. I taught myself BASIC and reprogrammed the hangman game in my school classroom when I was 7. And now I'm completely hopeless when it comes to something as simple as making a website.
Let's say I wanted to put up a web page.
Let's also say I last touched HTML circa 1994.
What would you recommend in terms of easy-to-use-for-an-amateur web design software?
get a mac and mobile me. use iweb.
PRESTO!
:p
heh, I have a Mac, but I don't think I want to go the mobileme route
What're you trying to do?
Most sites use CSS for layout and Javascript for some functions, but you can do the basics with HTML--it just won't have a lot of flair.
But I don't know of any cheap/free wysiwyg software out there offhand.

Then get a design template.

Hire Corey! He's cheap
You should have iWeb on your drive already. It can publish to a folder (not just MobileMe).
If that doesn't suit your needs, and you don't want to bite the bullet and learn CSS/HTML, then I would second @FiZ's advice and go with RapidWeaver.
huh, i didn't realize you could use iWeb independent of mobileme. That might be the way to go. I'll look into rapidweaver too.

A serious suggestion: Weebly.com
@Ream: Intriguing, but i think that might be a little TOO basic, I think I want something I've got a little more control with.
oh, a great website to test out how your page will look in other web browsers: browsershots.org
