Vegas isn't THAT rough for the poor, as long as you acknowledge that you need to be cheap. (Just don't plan on doing too much gambling -- that can make you poorer, fast!)

Yes....Southwest airlines has a ton of flights out of LV, and they conveniently sell one-way tickets hassle free. Unless you've already got credit card debt out the wazoo, I'd say DO IT. (however, this is coming from a guy who flew across the country to meet a bunch of internet people and dress up like Bruce Lee for a night when he had no discernible income to speak of.)
@Jason- I have no credit cards! I have a lot of student loan debt, but that's it. But that also means I have to save up actual money to spend on this trip, no putting plane tickets on credit cards for me.

There are also some excellent hikes and parks around LV -- Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire are the two big ones.
