oh and I guess in before "the arcade fire sucks" or "i don't get the arcade fire." I'm more or less questioning the logic about this and less so about my enjoyment about the quality of the music of either the arcade fire or the black keys
maybe its one of those oscar type things where they give BEST MOVIE and BEST DIRECTOR to different people, they loved them both and wanted to honor them both so they kinda split it?
yah but at least in that case both movies are usually nominated in both categories
here it's like only one album in the more speicfic category also so happens to be nominated for album of the year (and won!) i dunno, still find it BIZZARO
that is pretty weird. and i do agree that brothers should have been nominated for album of the year too. shouldn't the best "alternative" album be up for best album of the year?
also, whats the difference between best record and best song? i really can't tell.
@Skanko: it'd be more like Toy Story 3 winning Best Picture this year but losing Best Animated Feature.
I think the simple and obvious answer is that the Recording Academy doesn't have any clue what they're doing. The very first category was Pop Vocal - Duo or Group, and Sade was nominated. I've never counted, but isn't she one person?
@-j. - good point. i think also they have all these set categories that might not really 'fit' the way music is anymore, so they just try to take the people they want to honor and shoe horn them into the categories they already have.
@Skanko: yeah, and I felt kind of weird about the Lifetime Achievement awards. Not that the recipients weren't deserving (the ones I'd heard of certainly were), but it really felt like "let's make sure we get one classical, one gospel, one punk, one country..." The whole thing smacked of tokenism, not pure merit.
@-j. - the other thing with lifetime achievement awards, do you ever get the feeling that they are given almost begrudingly? like "yeah i know we never liked you enough to give you an award while you were current, but i guess you've hung around awhile and so we'll give you this". either that or like a long overdue apology for ignoring them.
Normally I don't give two shits about the grammy's but I read this in the paper and it seemed... odd to me
does that mean if the black keys were nominated for album of the year they would've won? or "the suburbs" wasn't alternative enough?

one (i think record) goes to the procuer while the other goes to the artist itself, I think
i agree, i thought the same thing. it makes no sense.
also, best record goes to the artist, best song goes to the songwriters.

sade is also the name of sade's band, weirdly.
