I've never done that- I've always used Craigslist or have done the "driving around" method.

my one experience with that was wholly unproductive

My employer hired a consultant for me. He looked at the MLS listings, immediately knew that all 8 of them in the area that matched my basic requirements were out of date, pulled up Craigslist, showed me a bunch of things I had already seen, and saved me the trouble of calling them all individually to find out some things that weren't in the listings.

Unless they know the area very well, they're probably useless.

Well, one of them was like "we make the appointments and all you have to do is show up" That makes me think they aren't going to be giving me a buncha crap and have a little BBB thangy-doodle on their site. My big thing is the fee they charge that isn't for anything other then their listings and appointment set ups. Personally, I think it should include any necessary application fees. I also think that despite what their ad says that I'd get bamboozled anyway.

It's funny but another agency I ended up calling has like this huge fee. It covers any application fees and then your deposit on the house/apt is half of one month. That and the guy sounded a lot nicer and invited me to their office. If I do end up working with either of these companies I will be super cautious and have the BBB on speed dial!

What should go here?
