I just wear jeans all the fucking time and while I have been fine with that historically, I haven't been a bike commuter until this year and I imagine that could get a bit uncomfortable. Also I am going to the beach soon so I tried on a few pairs of shorts today in the store and they all seemed awkwardly short, too baggy. Or just covered in pockets or some pattern that was too d-baggy!
Sounds like cutoff pants are the answer, ladies? And leave the ends ragged or I don't know sew it up somehow or something? (Mental image of cutoff jeans, concerned about appearing WT)
I don't know about the cutoffs, but that's a personal choice. These look okay to me: http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=12640&vid=1&pid=647028&scid=647028002
I'm gonna ditto all this and say regular jeans that are cut just a little above the knee. You can leave them a little scraggly but get rid of the big string pieces. The best way to do this is to go to a thrift store and buy some 50cent pants and hack away...awesome awesome awesome i love summer and bike jeans!
I had a long discussion on this with my female roommates when I lived in Ireland. Apparently there MEN do not wear shorts, they wear Capris with flip flops.
I informed them that in the civilized world this was not the case but they did not believe me.
Yeah, I'm leaning towards Sarah's suggestion, myself. Plus, if you get cotton (or cotton blend), they'll dry faster if you get them wet. Denim takes forever to dry.
Man I am not certain that I can pull off a pattern like that, but I'm willing to try things on to see how they work.
Joe: Yeah man, I am against that idea from the start! (Also another thing I never really wear is flip flops, so I'm halfway disqualified from that one anyway)
I don't LIKE to wear shorts. I wear them out of necessity when it's hot and I don't want to sweat my balls off. Cutoffs seem like a reasonable option. I have one beat-up pair of cargo shorts, I'll admit, which for some reason don't look tooly on me. I've been told!
I'm anti cut-off jeans. That shit looks sloppy, and like you just pounded a bunch of beers while listening to White Snake and hanging out with your bros on a couch you put on the roof of your house. Bonus points if you have a little wear and tear hole on the jean shorts in the crotchetal region.
i like Bizzy and Betty's selections best. to my knowledge, Shane doesn't wear shorts... at least, i've never him in them. but i'll ask him after he's done with the golf tournament today, cuz he's good at this kind of thing!
Tracking.
Also tracking I was just thinking this last night
Dickie cutoffs.
I might have to track this one too. Jeans are impractical when you're the skateboarding gopher for a busy company.

I don't want to see you wearing any jeans cut at the knees, scurvyman.
Ugh@old man pants.
I like man clothes that don't look like they were fussed over or expensive.

oh goodness, no! do not wear manpris!
i liked mizsarah's suggestion best.

thank me later.
but you have to wear them with those shoes/no socks or it doesn't count.
ok but for reals i think these are nice.

It's not the shorts that make you look like an asshole. :)
I like Sarah's, but maybe in a less breezy/beachy fabric, and bizzy's last one.
@bizzy lol at the plaid and loafers. He *may* be able to get away with that sort of thing with an edgy tee and chucks? Definitely not loafers.
heh. i just can't wear shorts, myself. i don't even own a pair. so, i totally know what you mean.
shorts + men can be very tricky. cargo shorts can be acceptable, just stay away from the jorts.
@srb: omg I love you for not wearing shorts.
@WordNerd thanks. i consider it a public service.
it is true, tho, dudes that wear shorts almost always look like complete tools. why is that?
actually, i don't look like a tool, just someone to be pitied, i think.

bicycle knickers!!!

or tight-ish jeans, cut off just above the knee.

Unless that's what you're going for.
On the reasonable side, all these ideas aren't half bad:

I like the second one Bizzy picked. I like the flat-front ones, preferably in plaids on guys.
