I tried asking a scientist. Needless to say, I was not pleased with the results.

magnetic force is one of my favorite topics ever!!! i love working with the dynamics, and just reading and studying. there is a lot of mystery involved- like with lightening, but a lot safer! (to a degree...)

1) Assume the electromagnetic force. It's one of the four fundamental forces of nature, so if you want more justification on this point, you're SOL.

2) The electromagnetic force creates a magnetic dipole moment (magnetic orientation) wherever an electric dipole moment exists, such as in a piece of metal carrying an electrical current.

3) Certain solid materials have the property that when subjected to a magnetic field, the atoms in their crystal lattice may permanently realign themselves to an alignment close to that of the induced dipole moment, rather than springing back to their original state when it is removed. These materials are called ferromagnetic, since the property was first observed in Iron.

4) A ferromagnetic object can be "trained" to have a particular magnetic dipole moment by exposing it to a magnetic field, passing an electric current through it, spinning it relative to a medium with different electrical properties, or even subjecting it to a shockwave that causes the metallic electrons to vibrate in a particular direction, inducing a small electric current.

aw dude i was going to post this last night but then i thought "eh post it when you get into work"

this shit is fucking classic...

What should go here?
