Everyone will for a bit. I've gone through two smoking bans, one in Ohio and one in Milwaukee, and people will be all "OMFG I CANT BELIEVE I HAVE TO GO OUTSIDE TO GET CANCER" for like a month, and then it'll just become normal. Well, they might complain a bit longer since it'll be winter when it goes into effect. But it's been found that bars/restaurants don't suffer any business losses as a result of the ban, and the non-smoking patrons enjoy the experience more. And, since you have to leave "the action" so to speak to go smoke, the smokers actually smoke less because they don't want to leave their friends, which saves them money. Everybody wins!
Yeah, I agree that there won't be as much of an effect as people think. Also, I have a few friends who smoke who are saying "I prefer it this way. I hate smoky bars". I'm happy because I don't have to leave some of my favorite bars smelling like an ashtray.
It happened a while ago here too, but there really wasn't any furor about it. Of course in these parts cigarette smoke is the least of anyone's worries.
Wait until the first time you wake up hung over with hair that *doesn't* stink of cigarette smoke. That feeling is pretty amazing. Well, less terrible.
The funny part about smoking bans is that the bars that reeked of smoke worst will probably reek like grease now. YUM!
Also, a nice side effect is that a lot of places have smoker's patios now, which means, MORE PATIOS! Of course, the crappy part is that some patios are where there are ONLY SMOKERS which is lame.
A couple of councils in Sydney are starting to introduce smoking bans for outdoor eating areas in pubs and restaurants as well. I am looking forward to reclaiming these awesome patios.
Down here in Texas where it's more temperate, we tend to do alot of our drinking outside anyways, and any bar worth a damn has a patio or a deck. People still bitched a fit, though.
One of my musician friends swears it's the best thing that ever happened to him.
@Jas - We have a lot of patios here too. But, they tend to be less popular this time of the year. Especially with all of the girls who insist on wearing the most skimpy outfits in the middle of winter. I bet there are a lot of cases of hypothermia around here in winter.

I hated it when it first happened in jersey, but its been SO LONG here now, i'd probably hate it if we went back.
I loved when it happened here. Suddenly I could see the band! And breathe!

I'm actually surprised that it passed here. Or even that it went to the city council.
Wait? It is almost 2012. People still smoke?? ;)
Yeah! I even saw a guy smoking a pipe the other day.
Smoking is banned all over here in Calif- except for pot smoking. That's acceptable
I think it would take a lot to make it legal to smoke pot here in Idaho.

@JasAsian: I love that phrase "bitched a fit". That's the best. #evaseemsroloveprofanitytoday
Last time I was in a bar that allowed smoking, it was kind of weird and miserable.
As much as smoking is an iconic part of the bar experience.
@She Who Dares: I actually used that phrase in conversation today and thought of you!
@JasAsian! THAT IS THE BEST! HUGS HUGS HUGS.
