It makes me laugh at how defensive they are, without really examining the evidence. But yeah, Rustin bringing up lawsuits just put me over the top. Hilarious.
@gram - I can't really go into details, but before the site launched, friends of mine helped me out with the logo, and then after the site was sold, they claimed that I owed them money.
I just find the duality of their statement "We just respect what you had done, because it was so brilliant, SO FUCK OFF, YOU BIG WHINER!" to be bizarre.
What's most hilarious is that it is now 17 MONTHS since the dude first emailed me and showed me Nicetags, and it looks pretty much the same as it did then.
And I look at the code, and it makes me barf in my mouth at how crappy it is. Instead of using modern CSS and HTML markup, they used the same crappy circa-2005 code that I originally wrote... For example, back then, making a rounded corner required like 5 recursive bold tags - now it is 1 css rule. But instead of using the new, more proper way, they just cut and pasted the old code.
I am also really surprised at how butt hurt some people are about Consumating going away. Like I personally wronged them by selling the site and allowing it to be shut down. Hell, I tried to buy the site back from CNET so I could keep it running on my own dime.
The reasons I'm on NiceTags: 1. I hate a lot of the people here on GTI... no fault of ben's. 2. I always liked the UI for Consumating... not the graphics or styling, just the way the system works. It was unique and well-developed. GTI is more like Tumblr meets... fucking Digg or something.
Now, I totally understand your concerns ben, particularly about the stolen intellectual property. I think for NiceTags to work it needs to have a real programmer and a real web designer behind the wheel, which I'm not sure it has, which is why my first post there was to say that I had no hopes for the site.
HOWEVER, the fact remains that you, Ben, had a hand in creating that monster, because you developed an amazing and one-of-a-kind platform that people enjoyed, and then it got sold to CNET, who buried it almost immediately. I can't blame you for selling it off, and I can't blame anyone for wanting to revive it. It created a lot of great relationships and memories, and it was hard for everyone when that got ripped away.
So here's what I think needs to happen for this wrong to be right:
1. NiceTags needs to overhaul the entire system, starting with the stolen graphics and many blatant Consumating references, and working it's way toward customizing the site so that it's not just a palette swapped Consumating. I think it could be easily done with a volunteer designer [don't look at me, I don't have that kind of time], but it has to be done before NT ever comes out of beta. 2. Ciccio, Paranoid Android, and anyone else running NT need to present a working prototype of the site to you, so you can agree that it doesn't infringe on any IP of yours.
Side note: GTI has gone dark on the developer side. I'm not saying you or anyone should have to keep working on it, but from Day 1 it's only been a holdover for all us lost and confused Consumators who didn't quite like how SNW works. If any new folks are going to come along, it's going to have to be more than a parallel-universe Tumblr.
I can't stress enough that you did a really really good job on Consumating, despite whatever flaws you may have seen in it. This is like a kid wanting to grow up to be just like dad, and instead of finding their own path, they mimiced your actions, and that wasn't the right thing to do.
Besides Ben, now you can take a few screenshots to put in your portfolio... if anyone asks you can just tell them "I'm so awesome, other people want to copy me."
Personally, I could give a shit if NiceTags lives or dies... I know where to find all the people I like, but I do prefer the way Consumating used to operate.
They don't need to pass their work by me for approval, they just need to stop using shit they shouldn't use!
