So, I had my meeting with my advisor and the director of masters' training yesterday. Turns out somebody set up a fake gmail account to anonymously send the dept. two emails I sent - one I sent everybody in my theories class (taken fall 2010) that had the pics of the midterm attached, and one I sent out at the end of our multicultural class (taken fall 2011) suggesting we divide and conquer the questions and make a group study guide, given that the professor gave us six multi-part questions and told us four of them would be on the exam.

At the meeting, I agreed that taking pictures of the exam probably pushed the boundaries of what our theories professor had in mind when he told us we could take whatever notes we wanted while going over the graded midterm to use for studying for the final. It was insinuated that my organizing the study guide was slightly unethical; I countered that organizing it online via email was no different than setting up a study group. We'd all walk away with the same info in the end, and when it came down to it, we all still had to take the essay exam. When the meeting was all said in done, it was noted that I wasn't in trouble, having only exercised "poor judgment", and to be more careful.

Some important thoughts remain, though:
* Who did I piss off enough for them to harbor YEAR OLD information to use against me in a very poor attempt to get me in trouble for academic dishonesty? If you had a problem with it then, you're kind of invalidating your own claim by waiting so long.
* If you seriously think suggesting we create a group study guide is academic dishonesty, you need to read the student code of conduct. Students organize study groups all the time.
* To actively create a fake email account and not stand by your trumped up claim is not only cowardly but malicious. I want to hunt down and destroy this person.
*The worst part is: this is somebody I've had in every class I've taken as a masters student. My trust in half my cohort is now shattered. This person can rot in hell.

This is so bizarre. I'm glad that it's not going to cause academic issues for you. I hope that person who did this to you dies in a fire.

Well, I'm relieved to hear that nothing further will (or should) come of it as far as "the authorities" are concerned. Glad you're in the clear!

But yes, someone out there obviously had this planned from the get-go...fancying themselves an academic vigilante, perhaps.

"somebody I've had in every class I've taken as a masters student"

I'd make a strong bet it's someone who is nice to you, maybe even flattering, but can never make sustained eye contact with you. They'd have to have an incentive for doing so and are eager to see how these meetings are affecting you.

Be careful. You don't have to trust everyone, but in the end most people are good-hearted or in the very least, well-intentioned.

Also, HUGS. You're cool. Five years from now this won't even register as a blip on your radar. &hearts

Well, I have my suspicion on who it is - there's one girl who was in the necessary classes, but is now taking classes on another campus for the rest of the time we're in grad school. She also didn't take part in the multicultural study guide compilation (seems hypocritical [though not impossible] for somebody to rat me out and yet take part in what you're ratting me out for). Again, I have no *proof*, but I think it'd take cojones the size of Canada to rat me out in such a cowardly way, but still see me in class for an entire semester.

Also, thanks for the encouragement guys. It means a lot. :)

What should go here?
